Memorising Playing Cards: Event 5 at Indian National Memory Championship 2017

Indian National Memory Championship 2017 is happening at Jal Vihar, Necklace Road, Tank Bund, Hyderabad (India) on 15th October 2017. We have 4 different groups – Kids, Junior, Adults and Senior Categories. You may compete in any category depending upon your age.

Besides winning “The Indian National Memory Champion 2017” title, lots of cash prizes (Rs 1,00,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,0000), Trophies and Medals are there to be won. It is a great opportunity for the youngsters, adults alike to learn and practice Memory as a hobby for a better and healthy living. Here, Squadron Leader Jayasimha, Memory Maestro, President World Memory Sports Council for India & Multiple Guinness World Record Holder explains as to how to memorise a deck of cards.

Out of all the Memory disciplines, memorising playing cards is most interesting, exciting and challenging as well.

A deck of playing cards will have 52 cards after we remove the jokers.

We have – Hearts, Spades, Diamonds and Clubs – 4 different categories.

In each category there are 13 cards. Like A, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K…making it total of 52 cards.

A Playing card will have a symbol (Diamond, Club, Spade or Hearts), a number and also we have to remember its sequence (location – position in the deck of cards)

There are many methods to memorise.

Different Memory athletes use different methods.

Basically what I teach my students is to imagine A – for Hearts, B – for Spades, C – for Clubs and D – for Diamonds.

For Numbers, we use the peg words (Phonetic method) which was explained earlier in memorising NUMBERS section.

There after we take one person from our Memory file and associate 6 cards together making a visualisation story.

My students are able to do that perfectly. Some of them have mastered it so well that they are able to do 2 deck of Cards as well.

I haveNiyudh, Avinaash, Rahul, Nitya, Meghana&PraharshitaGayatri, All these youngsters are using the above method and doing it effectively.

However, the method that I personally follow is Person, Object and Action Method (POA).

I assume different images for different symbols.

All the Hearts as my family members- one number for one person.

Spades as film actors – most of them couple or in pairs – Hero and Heroine

Diamonds – are vehicles

Clubs are Fruits and vegetables.

I take a set of 3 cards and make an association, then use LOCI method or Memory Palace Method. I have 17 locations in my house (17 x 3 = 51 and 1 extra card, making it a total of 52 cards). In each location, I memorise the set of three cards association (POA) in sequential order. I am able to do it perfectly. This is what most of the memory athletes across the world use it.

You have to see and explore as to which method you are comfortable with and there after practice till it becomes easy.

So in the competition, a deck of 52 cards are shuffled and given. The contestants have to memorise them in order. Thereafter they will be given an answer sheet where 4 columns withsymbols are given. The contestants have to mark the number of the card in that symbol within the time.

The Arbiters will cross verify the cards, if you get them all correct, then you will be the winner.
